Why are there short films?
What's the point?
The point of making short films is to create something that provides the same qualities as a full length film whilst being able to fit it into a short amount of time. People can usually enjoy short films for a low price or even no price and they can be good for people with a short attention span. They can also be used to expand skills and influence others to become involved in media. Short films can also help to educate people without causing boredom.
In other cases, short films can be shown in a movie theatre before the actual film starts, for example, Disney Pixar uses short films before every film they show in order to entertain the audience and give the aspiring director a chance to gain a career in film and media.
Who makes them?
People who make short films are usually aspiring film makers who want to develop their skills and be noticed for their work. These people are usually students of film or people who want to be involved in the film and media career. Famous directors can also make short films to keep their audience interested whilst they work on other films.
How are they exhibited?
Short films are usually exhibited through designated areas that can be shown to the public, for example, cinemas or large screens in public areas. They can also be uploaded to places like YouTube or Vimeo where the short film can be viewed from anywhere in the world, which creates a much larger audience for the creator. Certain universities that specialise in film and media may also exhibit their students short films to the public as a way of celebration and appreciation for the end of examinations.
Has this always been the case?
In the 1900s, people would go to the movie theatre to watch short films. This would be because most technology we have today wasn't available then so they would have no other form of entertainment. People also used to watch short films in order to lift their spirits and allow them to spend time with one another. In modern society, there are a lot more forms of entertainment but the tradition of going to the movie theatre is still in action and very popular. Short films have become less popular than full length ones but they are still being made and watched by people in other ways other than going to a public viewing. In some ways short films have become a lot more available to the public after being uploaded to public media sites, however the tradition of watching short films in a movie theatre has become less popular.
